10 Healthy Cookbooks I’m Loving 2020

Aside from reading thriller novels, if I could spend all day reading cookbooks, I’d be pretty dang happy! So with that, here are my current 10 fave healthy cookbooks. This list has a focus on paleo/ketogenic diets, but not all of these books are exclusive to this way of eating so regardless of your dietary needs and preferences, I think there’s something for everyone here! And, these make awesome holiday gifts! 😉 Enjoy!

Vinegar Revival: Artisanal Recipes for Brightening Dishes and Drinks with Homemade Vinegars by Harry Rosenblum
Ever since I made apple cider vinegar last year, I’ve been really into vinegar so it’s no surprise that I fell in love with this cookbook. Here’s the synopsis: “Vinegar Revival shows you how to use homemade or store-bought vinegar–made from apple cider, beer, wine, fruit scraps, herbs, and more–to great effect with more than 50 recipes.” In particular, I really liked the section on infused vinegars and am currently testing an adaptation of the tarragon and black pepper vinegar. Yum!

Ready or Not!: 150+ Make-Ahead, Make-Over, and Make-Now Recipes by Nom Nom Paleo by Michelle Tam
I am currently loving Michelle Tam’s new cookbook, Ready or Not! This cookbook focuses on ways to stock your kitchen with pantry staples and make-ahead meals so you’ve always got healthy and delicious food on hand. I, of course, love that her recipes have an Asian-influence and am currently obsessed with her kimchi applesauce, sriracha ranch dressing, and hot and sour soup.

The Bone Broth Bible by Emma Ellice-Flint
If you love bone broth or are just curious about it, then you definitely need to check out this cookbook! This cookbook is a great introduction into what bone broth is and how to incorporate it daily into your diet. I love all of her creative recipes and I made a dairy-free version of her purple onion soup that was amazing and soo simple to make! Definitely recommended.

The Keto Diet: The Complete Guide to a High-Fat Diet, with More Than 125 Delectable Recipes and 5 Meal Plans to Shed Weight, Heal Your Body, and Regain Confidence by Leanne Vogel
This cookbook has become my keto bible lately! Similar to Leanne’s blog, I love all of the creative and healthy recipes she has in this cookbook. Since I’ve switched my way of eating closer to a keto-lifestyle, this book has been super helpful and I love that her recipes are dairy-free since this is pretty rare for keto cookbooks!

Salt: The Essential Guide to Cooking with the Most Important Ingredient in Your Kitchen by Leslie Bilderback
I love a good sea salt, but in a lot of ways I’m a salt newbie so I found this book really interesting. The author takes you through the basics of salt and a bunch of fun DIY salt infusions, for example: sriracha salt, chocolate salt (what???!!!), bourbon salt, bacon salt, mustard salt, and roasted garlic salt. If you love salt or are looking for fun and easy ways to spice up dishes in your kitchen, this cookbook is a fun one!

An Avocado a Day: More than 70 Recipes for Enjoying Nature’s Most Delicious Superfood by Lara Ferroni
An entire cookbook focused on avocados?? Ummm, yessss!
I love all the creative options in this cookbook, and in particular, I really liked the grilled avocado skewers and avocado pickles (I’m working on a sugar-free version of these). Note: this cookbook isn’t paleo/gluten-free so recipes may require some adaptations depending on your dietary preferences.

The Ketogenic Cookbook: Nutritious Low-Carb, High-Fat Paleo Meals to Heal Your Body by Jimmy Moore and Maria Emmerich
I stumbled across this book in hopes of finding some inspiration for new dinner ideas and I can say that I’m happily satisfied! This cookbook has more than 150 delicious, keto-friendly recipes that work well even if you’re just looking for healthier options. My only slight complaint is that like most keto cookbooks, this one includes a lot of dairy.

Paleo Home Cooking: Flavorful Recipes for a Healthy, Gluten-Free Lifestyle by Sonia Lacasse
Whether you’re just curious about the paleo diet, are struggling to get started, or are a Paleo master, I think you’d like this book. Paleo Home Cooking has over 150 grain-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free recipes, and I also love that it has nutritional information for each recipe. I haven’t had a chance to cook from this one yet, but I can’t wait to make her Quiche Florentine and Italian Wedding Soup!

Deepa’s Secrets: Slow Carb New Indian Cuisine by Deepa Thomas
I’m a big fan of Indian food so this cookbook became an instant favorite. Here’s the synopsis: “A journey from old traditions to modern Indian cooking with deliciously simple and gut-healing recipes that leave you feeling fulfilled—rather than full. Upon learning that rice and bread were the culprits for her husband’s Type 2 diabetes, Deepa Thomas deconstructed and reinvented her native Indian cuisine. Deepa made anew seventy slow carb recipes, incorporating time-saving Western cooking techniques, breaking-news research on gut health and weight loss, and Ayurvedic wisdoms”

Some of my favorites include Deepa’s Green Sauce, her Herbed Asparagus and Macademia Soup, and Mary’s Famous “Cutlets” (Meatballs). Note: this cookbook does include legumes so if you’re strict paleo you may need to adapt some of the recipes.

Keto Comfort Foods by Maria Emmerich
This cookbook reminded me of the philosophy I use in my cookbooks and recipes: to recreate your favorite foods and meals using healthier substitutions! This book has over 170 hearty recipes and I’m currently working on an adaptation of her garlicky biscuits. Similar to The Ketogenic Cookbook I mentioned above, the only downfall of the book for me is that it includes dairy so if you’re sensitive to dairy, the recipes will require some substitutions.
